How to Tell if a Wall Is Load-Bearing

Updated September 2026 · Written by H. Malekghasemi, P.Eng.

Before you can plan a wall removal, you need to know what you're dealing with. Load-bearing walls carry weight from the floor or roof above down to the foundation; non-load-bearing (partition) walls just divide space. Here's how to spot the clues — and why the clues alone aren't the final word.

Signs a wall might be load-bearing

1. It runs perpendicular to the floor joists or roof trusses Look in your basement or attic for exposed joists. A wall running across the direction the joists span is a common sign it's picking up their load.
2. There's a beam, post, or wall directly below it Check the basement or crawlspace for a beam, steel column, or foundation wall lined up underneath. Structural elements tend to stack vertically through a house.
3. It's an exterior wall, or a shared wall in a semi/townhouse Exterior walls almost always carry load. Party walls between attached homes usually do too.
4. It sits near the centre of the house Builders often place a structural "spine" wall roughly down the middle of a house to shorten joist spans — a common layout in many Ontario homes.
5. It's noticeably thicker than nearby partition walls Structural walls sometimes (not always) use larger framing lumber, making them slightly thicker than a standard interior partition.
Why these signs aren't enough on their own: a wall can be load-bearing along part of its length and not the rest. Renovations over the years can also add or remove support in ways that aren't obvious just by looking. Every year, homeowners who "just checked the basement" open up a wall that turns out to be carrying more than they thought.

What a professional actually checks

Bottom line: use these signs to get a sense of what you're dealing with before you budget or plan a layout — but treat any wall as load-bearing until a qualified designer confirms otherwise, especially before you let a contractor start cutting into it.
